Hortus Malabaricus Introduction

A tribute to Hortus Malabaricus(The Garden of Malabar) – a 15th Century 12 volume book published by Dutch Governor of Kochi Heroics Adrian’s Van Rheede. The work was edited by a team of nearly a hundred including physicians (such as Ranga Bhat, Vinayaka Pandit, Appu Bhat and Itty Achuden) professors of medicine and botany, amateur botanists (such as Arnold Seyn, Theodore Jansson of Almeloveen, Paul Hermann, Johannes Munnicks, Joannes Commelinus, Abraham a Poot), and technicians, illustrators and engravers, together with the collaboration of company officials, clergymen (D. John Caesarius and the Discalced Carmelite Mathaeus of St. Joseph’s Monastery at Varapuzha). The book also give evidence on the social, political and cultural events of Kerala during 1678 – 1693. Malayalam language was first printed in this book.

We honour K S Manilal who devoted over 35 years of his life to research, translation and annotation work of the Latin botanical treatise Hortus Malabaricus and bringing it back to Malayalam after a long 330 years.

Hortus Malabaricus have 742 flora mentioned (with its locations and uses) in which almost all of them have medicinal properties that can save us from lifestyle diseases like Heart-attack, Sugar, Cholesterol and even Cancer. These plants and herbs can be easily converted as part of our diet or can be consumed as medicine.

Not many people know about this text. We find this as a right time to create an awareness among people through a series of videos about the 742 flora mentioned in Hortus Malabaricus. We believe this information can transform the way we live.
